Grantwriting that makes requests more powerful and effective

Your application to a foundation, corporation or government agency has just one chance. Fail to capture the reviewer's attention and interest, and you'll be tossed on the rejection pile and lose the opportunity.

Having all the right information isn't enough. The request has to connect with the reviewer at both emotional and rational levels. That's where I can help. My approach to grants goes beyond the requirements to ensure that you make emotional connections with reviewers. It helps the people who make decisions understand why they should share your objectives and commitment.

Whether the grant application requires a lengthy narrative, or demands that you pack everything into small boxes on an online form, I can help you sharpen your request to enhance your chances of success. I'll work with you in one of two ways:

Complete Grantwriting: I'll develop a basic understanding of your organization, objectives, and project, and review the requirements for the funding source you're planning to approach. Then I'll provide a detailed estimate for my fee. Once you approve the estimate, we'll work together to assemble all the information, and I'll develop the first draft grant request. We'll fine-tune it, and once it's complete, you'll be ready to submit it. (If I don't believe your request is a good match for the funding source, or think I can't meet the deadline, I won't take the project.)

Grant Improvement: Think you have all the details in place and are ready to submit? I'll review, edit and polish your request to ensure that it's as effective as possible. This process takes less time and costs less than you might expect, but can turn a good request into a much more powerful one.

Common questions about my grantwriting services:

WHAT IS YOUR HOURLY RATE FOR GRANT PROJECTS?

I don't have one. I prefer to work on a project fee basis, because that lets us both know what's involved before work begins. It also gives me an incentive to work as efficiently and effectively as possible. Working under an hourly rate rewards writers for working slowly and inefficiently.

ARE YOU WILLING TO WORK FOR A PERCENTAGE OF THE GRANT, IF WE ARE SUCCESSFUL?

No, for two reasons:

First, working "on commission" is considered to be unethical by professional grantwriters, and violates the Code of Ethics of the American Association of Grant Professionals, of which I'm a member. Most grantmaking organizations also oppose this practice.

Second, many factors are involved in grantmaking decisions, and whether or not the grant is awarded, a grant writer performs the same amount of work and deserves to be compensated.

CAN YOU DO FILL-IN-THE-BLANK GRANT APPLICATIONS?

Yes, I can provide the content for this type of application, which more grantors are using. In fact, when you have less space in which to present your case, it's more important to ensure that every word works as hard as possible for you. I'll help you make the best use of every character.

OUR APPLICATION IS DUE IN 36 HOURS! CAN YOU HELP?

Sorry, but I'm not a good source for last-minute assistance. My workload stays very steady, so I don't have the capacity for last-minute rush requests.

I WANT TO START A BUSINESS. CAN YOU FIND GRANT MONEY FOR ME?

No. I work with established non-profit and for-profit organizations, helping them request funding from legitimate sources. I am not aware of any grant programs for individuals and start-up businesses.

CAN YOU HELP ME GET FREE MONEY FROM THE GOVERNMENT?

If you're talking about the sources that some writers and infomercials claim are available to businesses and individuals, I am unaware of any of those programs and will not waste time trying to find them.
